Written by Aka Akasaka and drawn by Mengo Yokoyari, Oshi No Ko is a comedy mystery manga, focusing on the idol industry. Gorou is an Ob-Gyn in the sticks who is a massive fan of an up-and-coming idol Ai Hoshino. Their paths cross when she turns up at his hospital pregnant with twins. He is working on supporting her pregnancy but just before he is to deliver her babies he is killed by her stalker and is reborn as one of the twins. His name is now Aquamarine. His twin sisters, also a reborn person, name is Ruby.
The art style is very pretty. Yokoyari draws her characters very well and with very distinct designs. As the focus is on the idol industry, I noticed that the costume designs are very good on Ai. The panel layouts are well done, and it was easy to read this manga.
The story was notably well done. It was very well paced, with several plot twists that were well executed. I really liked how the story would offer snippets of Aqua and Ruby as teens, then switch over to the main plot of them as babies. The slow reveal of information to show how they ended up where they are in the future was a good choice, as it kept me gripped to the story.
The characters are all very strong in this manga. It was easy to become invested in them quickly. Aqua and Ai’s stories were particularly well done. I found them the most fleshed out character wise. I’m very interested in seeing where Aqua will end up in the next volume, and what he will end up doing.
Despite this I did not like some of the character interactions. The way that some of the adults react to the babies having adult intellect felt ridiculous at times. I know that this was done for comedic effect, but the jokes did not land for me a decent bit. There were times when this was played straight, and it affected the believability of some scenes.
The side characters were very entertaining. I noticed that they were mainly used for comedic relief but I also found that they had a good amount of depth as well. I look forward to seeing them develop in the future.
The weak point of this manga for me is some off-putting character interactions due to some of the humour not landing. The story, however, is very strong and I cannot wait to see what happens after this volume. I also liked the art style as well.
I think that if you enjoy shoujo manga or are interested in the idol industry or even just the entertainment industry, you will enjoy this. I see isekai enjoyers liking this as well as the reincarnation as a child plot is frequent in that genre.
This was a good start to a manga; I would give it a 4.4/5.
