Dandadan volume 2, by Yukinobu Tatsu, was just as good as the first volume. This volume follows the last with the conflict with Turbo Granny reaching its conclusion. The rest of the volume focuses a lot on slice of life interactions between the characters, especially Momo and Okarun. This then directly leads into the next arc in the story.
The art continues to be amazing in this manga, with the first chapter showcasing 3 rapid fire full double page spreads in a row almost immediately. Tatsu continues to show his strengths in panel flow and action sequences with all of these being highly engaging. Due to this volume having large sections of slice of life however another strength of his is seen with very strong visual comedy. The panels are engaging and filled multiple things to focus on.
The conclusion to Turbo Granny’s arc is very good, it somehow manages to make her sympathetic, despite her previous portrayal, while maintaining her crass personality. The slice of life sections are enjoyable, and the budding romance between Momo and Okarun is entertaining. The shift between the action and slice of life scenes feels very natural.
The pacing remains very quick, with a lot happening in this one volume. I very much enjoyed this manga’s story, and it does what it sets out to very well. I do wish, however, that there was more depth to it.
The strengths of this volume are the art, the action sequences, the comedy, the slice of life scenes, and the romance. This was a very strong follow up to last volume. The only weakness is that I wish that there was more depth to the story, but I do think that this story does not suffer from this.
I’d still say that people who like Chainsaw man would enjoy this. Also, Hells Paradise enjoyers would enjoy this too. Jujutsu Kaisen is similar in pacing to Dandadan so I recommend that as well.
This was an excellent volume; it keeps the strengths of the first with out skipping a beat. I’d give this a 4.5/5.
